Nicky Phillips was part of the inaugural season on the Canadian Music Theatre Project in 2012 with her new musical Central Park Tango (with Sheridan professor Robert Gontier). We welcome Jen Shuber and look forward to the debut of this remarkable story, The Journey that Saved Curious George.
Curious George, the beloved monkey of children’s books, is famous for his narrow escapes from danger. What is not well-known is how he symbolically safeguarded his own creators in times of danger. Margret and H.A. Rey were Jewish immigrants who fled Paris in 1940 with not much more than the Curious George manuscript on their backs. This is the story of how they escaped Nazi-occupied Europe and brought the stories of Curious George safely to America. Fighting against all odds, this husband and wife team found joy in a time of despair through their artwork and stories, ultimately sharing their little monkey with millions of children for years to come.
