Musical about Amish siblings in the big city delivers big laughs with lots of heart

Now Toronto: Glenn Sumi, January 5, 2018 Hold onto your bonnets, musical theatre lovers. Rumspringa Break! is the most entertaining fish-out-of-water show since that one about Mormon missionaries in Africa. The set-up is brilliant: Amish twins Ruth (Georgia Bennett) and Hannah (Arinea Hermans) head to the big city (Buffalo!) so Hannah can experience other ways of life before settling down with her black-hatted betrothed, Samuel (Joel Cumber). Once there, however, they run out of money and, thanks to Ruth’s green thumb and the help of a lanky dude named Skor (Kirkland Doiron), they start working at what they don’t realize is an illegal grow-op run by Skor’s grumpy employer, Cinnamon (Jamillah Ross). Naturally, complications ensue, in the form of a rival drug-dealing duo as well as Hannah’s jealousy over Ruth's sudden popularity with Skor. PROM QUEEN selected for NAMT’s 2017 Festival of New Musicals

National Alliance for Musical Theatre announced the line-up of new musicals for the 29th Annual Festival of New Musicals, which takes place on Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20, 2017 in New York. Now in its 29th year, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals attracts theatre producers from around the world for this industry-only event to discover eight new musicals presented in 45-minute concert presentations over two days. All production costs are underwritten by NAMT, at no cost to the writing teams. As a non-profit organization, NAMT funds the Festival entirely through donations, sponsorships and contributions. The Festival has introduced musical theatre producers to 244 musicals and 460 writers from around the world. As a direct result of the Festival of New Musicals, more than 85% of the musicals presented have gone on to subsequent readings, workshops, productions and tours, been licensed, and/or recorded on cast albums. Sheridan’s Canadian Music Theatre Project announces its 2017 line-up

June 6, 2017 (Oakville, ON): Sheridan College’s Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP), under the leadership of Michael Rubinoff, Associate Dean, Visual and Performing Arts, is an international centre of excellence for the development of new musicals in Canada. Since its inception in 2011, 15 shows have been incubated and continue their development in various stages: Four have enjoyed professional premieres, including Come From Away, which opened on Broadway in 2017 and received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Musical. This September, Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance, class of 2018, will participate in the workshops of four new musicals under the guidance of leading theatre practitioners.
